The village of Ashley Falls is about a mile distant from the bridges on the east bank. The erratic river then trends across the intervale in long zigzag reaches to a group of houses on the west bank. The wet buildings, exhibiting no signs of life, enveloped in the melancholy haze of rain, looked dreary in the extreme. The reach, immediately below a bridge that spans the river just below the group of houses, ends against the rocky face of a mountain spur that turns the river eastward.
